Abstract

This paper reviews some contemporary patterns about representation theories, specifically, in poststructuralism and Lacan’s thoughts on gaze. It focuses on Hal Foster’s book The Return of the Real (1996), and his idea of neo-avant-garde artworks crisscrossing historical avant-garde artistic movement. Finally, we explore some contradictions on the proposition.
