What is behind Overpopulation and Environmental Pollution?
Abstract
Data about the increasing rate of population growth on earth is alarming. According to statistics and censuses, in 1927 the Earth was inhabited by 2 million people. Moreover, the UN foresees a population growth of 12,000 inhabitants by 2025, of 24,000 inhabitants by 2050 and 96,000 inhabitants by 2100. (Fabre-Luce, 1962)
Such substantial future increase may jeopardize the relationship between the overconsumption of natural resources by word powers, the soaring food prices suffered by the poorest continents, and the environmental pollution, caused by the Industrial Revolution, and so reflected in the destruction of tropical rainforests, in the ozone layer depletion, as well as in the greenhouse effect and global warming. All the scenes appear to be more dramatic in light of the pandemic, especially in underdeveloped countries such as Argentina, which is still struggling against gender inequality.
