Productive use of peri-urban land: Agroecological agricultural parks as a territorial system and environmental management tool.
Mary Poppins and the agrarian parks of Moreno
Abstract
The production of healthy food in peri-urban areas, where the largest amount of the population is concentrated globally, is a relevant problem.
The Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (RMBA) extends over 100 km, is home to about 15 million people and peri-urban agriculture (AP) develops 1.8 million hectares under production. And since the last 3 decades, the peri-urban productive land has suffered from disturbances and degradation processes that could accelerate its deterioration to a point of no return and with it, the supply of healthy food.
In this scenario, agricultural parks together with agroecological farmers are agents of change that can offer a system of transformation and environmental management.
To what extent is it possible to produce healthy food in the peri-urban areas of the RMBA, having a vision that preserves the soil and cares for the environment, based on the figure of agroecological agricultural parks (AP)?
If Mary Poppins, that very peculiar character, who approached problems through simple strategies, were present and said: “The universe is on your side. Everything is possible. Even the impossible is possible. Adapt to situations” would it be enough to transform the reality of the peri-urban?
